SUMMERDALE, Ala. — The Summerdale Town Council is planning to look into ways to improve safety along the town’s roads.
During Tuesday’s regular Council workshop, Mayor David Wilson announced that map renderings would be available at next week’s Council meeting of intersections needing improved safety measures.
“The County Commission did a traffic study of County Road 71 and (Alabama Highway) 59, and that is one of the most dangerous intersections in the county,” he said.
As previously reported, an Orange Beach woman was killed in a vehicular accident at that intersection last week.
During Tuesday’s workshop, Summerdale Police Chief Jimmy Davis gave insight into why the intersection is so dangerous.
“The angles of the intersection give an optical illusion,” he said, explaining that the illusion causes drivers to miscalculate distance.
Another intersection of concern discussed was County Road 32 and Foley Beach Expressway.
“Myles (Bishop), the chief (Davis) and myself met with (Baldwin County Commissioner) Tucker (Dorsey) and Volkert,” Wilson told the council. “They said there’s not going to be a red light there at this time.”
However, the mayor did say he had proposed the addition of a caution light that could later be changed out for a traffic light.
The council discussed these two intersections further, with Wilson asking members to be considering ways to improve traffic safety.
“We’ll have drawings Monday night,” the mayor said. “Action does need to be taken.”
