SUMMERDALE — The town of Summerdale is one step closer to once again getting its own town water supply.
During its regular meeting Monday, the Summerdale Town Council approved the purchasing of property and easements for the new well, and also awarded a $304,040 contract to drill the well to Griner Drilling.
As previously reported, the town Public Works Department drilled a well this past spring to test for the possibility of a new water supply. During May’s Council Meeting, Public Works Director John Resmondo reported the successful preliminary testing of the well, which will be located north of its current counterpart on Davis.
The need for a new well came when testing of the original 10-year-old well indicated contaminants in the water supply. As previously reported, the town of Summerdale subsequently shut down the well and began purchasing water from Robertsdale and Riviera Utilities.
With Monday’s action, Resmondo looks forward to continue working on the project.
“If everything lines up, we could be drilling out there in three weeks,” he said.
Following Monday’s meeting, Resmondo added that he anticipates that the city will once again begin pumping its own water this autumn.
“We hope to be up and running by the end of October,” he said.
Also Monday, the Summerdale Town Council:
Approved resolutions granting the incumbent, unopposed council members another term, which begins in November.
Approved licensing for Jet Pep Station, contingent upon the meeting of ABC Board Alcoholic Beverage License.
Heard a report of the Summerdale Police Department for July, which included the issuing of 377 tickets.
Discussed having a police officer on duty at municipal meetings.
