BAY MINETTE, Ala. - Pinch-runner Tommy Lott scored from third on Adam Heisler’s dropped-ball sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning to give Faulkner State a 3-2 win over Lawson State in Birmingham, ending the baseball Sun Chiefs’ seven-game losing streak in a rare Wednesday-afternoon game last week.
The win came after FSCC dropped a 9-7 slugfest loss a day earlier to Jefferson State in the first of two games in the Magic City.
WEDNESDAY
FSCC 3, Lawson 2
Lott was running for catcher Michael Tedesco, who singled leading off the ninth and moved to second on Tim Daw’s sacrifice bunt before he was replaced. Tailor Holley’s infield single moved Lott to third from where he scored on the dropped fly ball in left field moments before Tanner Williams grounded into and inning-ending double play.
Seven Sun Chiefs had one hit apiece, including Heisler’s game-opening double to start a two-run FSCC first. Chad Watson singled in a run and Cody Barber’s ground out plated the other.
The Cougars, who outhit Faulkner 10-7, scored single runs in the third and fifth innings to tie the score.
Taylor Roy, who started the eighth inning in right field as a defensive replacement, picked up the pitching win when he moved to the mound and worked the last two innings there after starter Travis Corley of Bay Minette gave up a leadoff single in eighth. Roy pitched two perfect innings with two strkeouts.
Corley struck out six Cougars and didn’t walk any.
TUESDAY
Jefferson State 9, FSCC 7
Jeff State countered an FSCC run in the top of the first with four in its first at bat and led the rest of the way despite getting outhit 15-13 in the game. FSCC scored three runs in the third after JSCC tallied once in the second, and the Sun Chiefs scored once each in the third through sixth innings.
The hosts staved off the Faulkner rallies with a three-run fourth and a single tally in the eighth for the final score.
Watson led Faulkner with three hits and an RBI.Tanner Williams doubled, singled and picked up an RBI with a ground out. Zac Cates had a two-run double in the third and another two-bagger in the seventh, and Barber and Roy each singled twice with Roy driving in a run
Starting pitcher Jason Gavel took the loss. He lasted just two-thirds of an inning and gave up four hits and four runs, all earned. Reliever Blake Cooper pitched the rest of the game. Cooper struck out six and walked four.
