Supporting the arts in public school

Developing artistic talent is one of the perks of going to public school if parents can’t afford a private teacher. During the 80’s and 90’s many extra curricular classes were being cut back because of funding. This has since improved and according to one report about Arts in Public Schools, has remained a constant in the past five years and our children should be encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity. It is so much easier to develop talents as a child than it is when we are older.

Since March is Youth Art Month many artistic accomplishments have been shown around Central Baldwin. Central Baldwin Middle School Band competed a few weeks ago for ratings at a District Performance Assessment and received superior ratings. The middle school also had a display of many art projects called "Paw Prints Art Gallery" from the whole school year, which also gave the students an opportunity to sell their work.

In the lower grades, the elementary school children receive instruction in visual art classes and music appreciation classes rotating every other week.

In Robertsdale High School as in many other high schools around the county, there are drama classes, creative writing classes and computer graphic design classes besides the visual arts and music offered. There is much to gain in the arts for students in the public school system.

Supporting the arts for your children helps to develop their talents and they learn discipline. Parents should encourage it at all times. One of the most notable way that parents can support their children's artistic efforts is through attendance at school arts events. When those fliers come home to announce a school concert or art display then go and see what your student has to offer. Promote practice times for musical instruments. Attend plays that are performed by their classmates. Encourage writing for an outlet of all the creative juices flowing through their brains. It is amazing what we can help our children achieve when we support them in their creativity.

According to last week’s paper there are more artistic accomplishments being shown around the county so we still have a chance to see what is being done. We should support our children in their efforts to develop their talents so they will look back on their childhood years and be happy that they had a wonderful opportunity to excel.
