SILVERHILL, Ala. — Authories say a Silverhill man, whose body was found following a fire, died as the result of a stab wound and not from the blaze.
As of Wednesday, five suspects have been arrested in connection with the death of Robert Paul Aitcheson, 51, including the victim’s own 16-year-old son.
The victim’s body was found in the early morning of Jan. 28 when his mobile home on Holston Street near Silverhill caught fire.
The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday, Jan. 30 the arrest of three suspects. Ian Aitcheson, 16, the victim’s son, and Danny O’Neil Weaver, 19, both of Robertsdale were arrested Friday morning, while a third man, Keshjuan Betts, who is listed as being from Lark Lane in Robertsdale, according to booking information, was arrested Friday afternoon. All three face charges of capital murder and arson.
The Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday morning that Amber Darlene Jerkins, 18, of Robertsdale had also been arrested in the case. She is being held on a count of capital murder and one count of arson in the 1st degree. Jerkins is being held without bond, according to a Sheriff’s Office press release.
A fifth suspect, Amen Lee Robert Wellock, 17, whose address is also listed as Cardinal Drive in Robertsdale, was arrested Wednesday and charged with conspiracy to commit murder.
“Wellock is charged because of his involvement in the planning of the robbery and murder of Aitcheson,” according to a press release issued by the Sheriff’s Department on Wendesday.
Wellock was taken to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Corrections Center where he was awaiting a bond hearing.
All were held by the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating the incident. The State Fire Marshals Office and The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is also investigating the matter.
The charges could carry the death penalty, said Chief Assistant District Attorney Michael Pylant.
Pylant indicated that the younger Aitcheson would be charged and tried as an adult.
“Arson in the first degree and capital murder are class A felonies,” said Pylant, adding that the seriousness of the crimes allowed prosecutors to charge the 16-year-old as an adult.
While life imprisonment and the death penalty are “on the table,” Pylant said that exact penalty prosecutors would seek has not been determined as yet.
“We believe that Ian Aitcheson and Danny Weaver entered the trailer at around 1 a.m. (Wednesday morning) with the intent to rob and murder,” said Mack. Mack declined to give more information on other suspects. Betts and Jerkins had not been arrested at the time of the press conference.
According to Mack, Ian Aitcheson lived with his father until a few days before the murder. Ian Aitcheson was said to be living on Cardinal Hill Drive in Robertsdale, the place where Aitcheson and Weaver were arrested.
According to information from the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, Mack says that it appears the elder Aitcheson was killed by a stab wound to the upper abdomen from a large knife. As of now, the knife has not been recovered.
Mack said he believes some money was taken from the elder Aitcheson’s home.
According to Mack, The Robertsdale Police Department attempted to stop one of the vehicles, and participated in the recovery of two stolen vehicles and the motorcycle apparently taken for Robert Paul Aitcheson’s place of business, Bob’s Body Shop in Gulf Shores.
The fact that authorities were dealing with murder, not just an accident did not come to light until a preliminary autopsy was performed, said Major Anthony Lowery, a spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office in a press release.
Fire Department Chief Gary Patrick said that the Loxley and Robertsdale Volunteer Fire Departments assisted the Silverhill VFD in putting out the blaze, which Patrick said happened in the “wee hours” of Wednesday morning.
