SWAT competes at Southeastern Swimming Championships

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Sixteen swimmers from the Southern Waters Aquatic Team (SWAT) competed at the 2011 SC Southeastern Swimming Championships in Nashville. Swimmers met age group time standards set by USA Swimming during the short course season to be eligible for this preliminary/finals meet.

Eight team members (pictured) swam in finals. Hannah Legg (16, Fairhope) finished sixth in the 100-, 200-yard backstroke and 400-yard IM, and swam B finals in the 100-, 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard IM; Olivia Hudson (15, Fairhope) swam a B final in 200-yard backstroke; Meredith Phillips (14, Spanish Fort) finished seventh in the 200-yard backstroke; and Kennedy Hendryx (10, Fairhope) finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke, and sixth in the 200-yard IM and 500-yard freestyle.

Kevin Pollard (16, Fairhope) finished seventh in the 200-yard fly and swam B finals in the 100-yard fly, 200-yard freestyle; Ben Morseth (16, Fairhope) swam B finals in the 200-yard backstroke and breastroke; Tyler Phelps (16, Robertsdale) swam the 200-yard backstroke, 200-, 400-yard IM in B finals; and Jackson Tunks (13, Fairhope) finished first in the 200-yard backstroke, 400-yard IM, second in 100-yard backstroke, third in 500-,1000-, 1650-yard freestyle, and fifth in the 200-yard IM.

“The team did well,” stated head coach, Rich Suhs. “Although we had a tough first day, as the meet went on, we swam better. By the third day we had eight swimmers make the finals. Jackson Tunks (13) had a fantastic finish to the meet by winning the 13-14 200 Back in a time of 1:54, which qualified him for the NCSA Junior Nationals.”

SWAT girls swimming the Senior 400-yard freestyle were Hannah Legg, Trista Phelps (15, Robertsdale), Olivia Hudson and Ashlynn Weissgerber (13, Spanish Fort). The 400 IM relay team consisted of Meredith Phillips, Trista Phelps, Hannah Legg and Olivia Hudson. Senior boys swimming the 400-yard relay were Ben Morseth, Ross Hudson (16, Fairhope), Tyler Phelps, and Kevin Pollard; and the 400-yard IM team included Tyler Phelps, Thomas Shane (16, Fairhope), Kevin Pollard, and Ben Morseth. Additional SWAT swimmers participating in the meet include Jackson Tharpe (15, Fairhope), Jackson Algiers (14, Daphne), Ramsey Shane (12, Fairhope), and Harrison Costantini (11, Daphne).
