DAPHNE, Ala. — The Emerald Dream Ball in Las Vegas, Nev., on New Year’s Eve honored 12 breast cancer survivors — including one of our own.
Dawn Bradley of Daphne was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2006. She was eight months pregnant when the ball dropped five days before Christmas.
Bradley gave birth to a girl by emergency cesarean section — and then faced a year full of chemotherapy and surgeries.
“There’s a one in 3,000 chance of getting breast cancer while pregnant,” Bradley said. “After the initial shock of this rare occurrence actually happening to me, I put my faith in God that he would take care of me.”
The mother of three armed herself with knowledge by researching treatments — succumbing to the cancer wasn’t an option.
“I knew a baby this healthy couldn’t come from a dying mother,” she said.
Bradley leaned on her church, the American Cancer Society and other breast cancer survivors for support. She visited pinklink.org where she entered her story for a chance at tickets to the Emerald Dream Ball.
“I knew my story was unique, but I never expected that out of the whole nation, someone from Daphne would be chosen,” she said. “It was a great surprise after the year we’ve had.”
Bradley, her husband, Morgan, and the other 11 survivors and their guests spent Dec. 26 through Jan. 2 in Las Vegas.
Lana Fuchs, of Lana Fuchs Couture, had her own struggle with cancer — one that motivated her to start the Emerald Dream Team, which hosts the Emerald Dream Ball. With the help of other sponsors, the Emerald Dream Team provides a week of spa treatments and make-overs for the survivors; the experience culminates with the red carpet ball.
Each woman received a full wardrobe and a custom-designed gown for the ball from Lana Fuchs Couture.
The lavish, black-tie extravaganza included music, entertainment, celebrities and fine cuisine at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Amber Reed of Spin Public Relations said in a statement.
Grandparents watched after Bradley’s three children while she and Morgan received pampering in Sin City.
“Morgan deserves this trip as much as I do,” Bradley said, referring to how interruption cancer caused to their daily lives.
“I am thankful for this opportunity to forget about cancer, even just for a little while.”
