There are four types of people you will find along the Gulf Coast.
The regulars who have decided to call the Gulf Coast home, living and working here year round. There are the tourists that venture to these parts a couple of times per year for some rest and relaxation.
Snowbirds are the third type, usually arriving about the same time as the first winter storm hits anywhere above the Mason-Dixon line.
Then there are the polar bears. This group could include members of any of the three listed above. They are the adventurous ones, the people who will stop at nothing when it comes to swimming in the Gulf.
On Jan. 1, in what has become one of the craziest traditions in the Southeastern United States, folks will gather at the Flora-Bama Lounge and Package store, will strip down to their Speedos or come in costume, and will dive head-first into the icy waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
From teenagers to keenagers, old and young alike will join in the annual New Year’s Day fun.
Pat McClellan, co-owner of the cultural landmark, says there is really no better way to start off the new year.
“We started this in the mid 80’s with some of my fishing buddies,” recalls McClellan. “We started jumping in the water at noon. We figured what better way to start the new year.”
Now, 26 years later, hundreds show up for the chilling event, many in costumes, for the New Year’s Day tradition, followed up with some black-eyed peas, and maybe a Bloody Mary.
“We’ve had Santa Claus jump in the water, some folks dressed like Santa’s helpers, and even my dog has jumped in as Rudolph, so, you’ll see all kinds.”
So how many people will brave the elements in order to say they have been part of the Polar Bear Dip?
“There will be probably 400 or so people jumping in the water, and 500 watching them,” McClellan said.
During the years, McClellan said some elected officials, from county commissioners to Ronnie Callaway, the first mayor of Orange Beach, have joined in the fun.
“It is a fun day and everybody who gets in the water will get a ticket for a free bowl of black-eyed peas and either a draft beer or a bottle of water.”
