Douglas Keaton Taylor, 85, a native of Union Town and a resident of Fairhope since 1979, died Saturday, March 28, 2009 at a local hospital, surrounded by family members.

He was a decorated World War II veteran, an active member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, and always a wise counsel to friends and relatives alike. He was smart, witty, and most of all, tolerant, kind and compassionate — he never walked past a person in need. He loved literature, travel, and a good argument about almost anything, but especially when the subject was politics or culture.

He was a loving father and devoted husband.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mary Edith Gangi Taylor, and sister, Edna Lois Miller.

Survivors include four sons, Douglas Keaton Taylor Jr. of Atlanta, Joseph Anthony Taylor of Boston, Michael Franklin Taylor of Fairhope and John Charles (Ginger) Taylor of Fairhope; three daughters, Edna Lois Taylor Harris of Mobile, Mary Margaret Taylor (Lee) Dumas of Fairhope and Donna Jean Taylor (David) Murff of Seattle; brother, Franklin “Peter” Taylor of Chickasaw; sister, Martha Tilton Addison of Lafayette, La.; 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 31 at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Fairhope.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 1 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church.
