Teams cap regular season tonight

MOBILE, Ala. – The 9-0 Daphne Trojans wrap up the regular season tonight at 1-8 Baker.

Despite the records and their home-field advantage clinched for the first round of the 6A playoffs, Daphne coach Glenn Vickery said his team must focus first on the Hornets.

"Baker is very aggressive on defense," he said. "They are well coached and play hard every play. Lately (on offense) they have spread the field more and have run some empty sets using lots of motion.

"We need to continue to improve weekly. It all begins at practice. We need to play at a higher level each week. (Against McGill-Toolen) we were pleased with the effort of our team. There is always something to improve on when you're dealing with 17-year-olds. We were coming off a big game (Fairhope) the week before and we need to put together a bunch of good weeks. That's what it takes to advance in the playoffs. Our kids and our coaches are working hard everyday to get to the level we need to be."

Vickery was proud of his team's effort against McGill, but said his defense may have been too intense, resulting in costly penalties.

"Our defense played so hard, penalties hurt us. We let McGill keep some drives alive."

Vickery will be facing one of his former players and associates at Baker in Hornets head coach Tim Massengale and assistants Jason Black, Mickey Orso and Chris Williams.

"Tim Massengale played for me and coached with me for several years," Vickery said. "He has several guys on his staff who I was fortunate enough to coach."

As of this writing, Daphne will likely host Blount in Round 1 of the 6A playoffs Nov. 5 at Jubilee Stadium.
