SILVERHILL — A teenager convicted in the 2009 slaying of his father will serve two consecutive life sentences.
Ian Aitcheson, now 17, along with four other teenagers, were arrested shortly following the Jan. 28 death of Robert Paul Aitcheson, 51, of Silverhill. Authorities determined the elder Aitcheson died as a result of a stab wound after his body was found following a fire in early morning hours of Jan. 28.
The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday, Jan. 30 the arrest of three suspects. Aitcheson, who was 16 at the time, and Danny O’Neil Weaver, then 19, both of Robertsdale were arrested Friday morning, while a third man, Keshjuan Betts, who is listed as being from Lark Lane in Robertsdale, according to booking information, was arrested Friday afternoon. All three were charged with capital murder and arson.
The Sheriff's Office announced on Tuesday morning, Feb. 3, that Amber Darlene Jerkins, then 18, of Robertsdale had also been arrested in the case. She was charged with capital murder and one count of arson in the 1st degree.
On Feb. 4, a fifth suspect, Amen Wellock, then 17, of Robertsdale, was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder.
The other four teens are awaiting trial in the case.
In March of this year, Ian Aitcheson was convicted of the lesser charge of murder and one count of arson. On Thursday, May 20, he was sentenced to one life term for each charge.
The incident was investigated by the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office, the State Fire Marshals Office and The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
In a statement issued in February of 2009, Baldwin County Sheriff Hoss Mack said the teens entered the home with the intent to rob and kill the elder Aitcheson.
According to Mack, Ian Aitcheson lived with his father until a few days before the murder. At the time of his arrest, Ian Aitcheson was said to be living on Cardinal Hill Drive in Robertsdale, the place where Aitcheson and Weaver were arrested.
According to information from the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, Mack said the elder Aitcheson was killed by a stab wound to the upper abdomen from a large knife.
According to Mack, The Robertsdale Police Department attempted to stop one of the vehicles, and participated in the recovery of two stolen vehicles and the motorcycle apparently taken from Robert Paul Aitcheson’s place of business, Bob’s Body Shop in Gulf Shores.
The fact that authorities were dealing with murder, not just an accident did not come to light until a preliminary autopsy was performed, said Maj. AP1-4nthony Lowery, a spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office, in a 2009 statement.
Fire Department Chief Gary Patrick said that the Loxley and Robertsdale Volunteer Fire Departments assisted the Silverhill VFD in putting out the blaze.
