Socialism is alive and strong in the great state of Alabama. Through Governor Riley’s pointed direction, reappraisals over the years have stolen millions in property taxes from the counties having prospered and the same dollars support the infrastructures in the more dormant, rural counties. Riley blames the Alabama Legislature, however, our state legislators and senators have no support from other districts to repeal or rescind the governor’s directions.
These reappraisals in Fairhope have crippled commercial and residential property owners. Landlords cannot absorb the additional taxes and, if passed on to tenants, homes and shops will be vacated. Increases of up to 300 percent have destroyed retirement plans of many and are as damaging as the greedy mortgage companies foreclosing on unaffordable adjustable rate mortgages. Property values have fallen to such lows that Riley’s actions have only added to our economic crisis. Mortgage companies require paid property taxes and can foreclose if not paid, and the state of Alabama will force a property tax sale for those not paid. I urge you to call the office of Governor Riley on Friday, May 8, at (334) 242-7100 and demand his intervention.
