Tenley Tough 5K, Fun Run and Family Fun Day raises $10,000 for young cancer patient

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Organizers with the Tenley Tough 5K and Fun Run and Family Fun Day say they raised more than $10,000 and money is still coming in from the May 21 fundraiser at the PZK Civic Center and Park in Robertsdale.

Proceeds from the event benefit Tenley Norman, an 11-month-old Loxley resident who was diagnosed with a Malignant Extrarenal Rhabdoid Tumor, a rare form of pediatric cancer.

“I went to school with both of Tenley’s parents, Jordan and Tanner Norman,” said Meagan Taylor, all of whom are Robertsdale natives and graduates of Robertsdale High School. “I have a 1 ½-year-old myself and when I heard about Tenley, I knew that we needed to do something big to help out.”

More than 400 runners participated in the 5K and fun run, Taylor said. “We had 400 bibs (runner designation numbers) and we ran out.”

Tenley is currently undergoing treatment at MD Anderson in Houston and is “doing better than expected,” Taylor said.

“She is about halfway through her treatments and we’re hoping that she continues to improve and get stronger every day.”

Family Fun Day followed the race, featuring a special performance from Elberta native Shelby Brown, who competed on last season’s The Voice. The event also featured pony rides, bounce houses, face painting, raffle drawings and vendors with part of the proceeds benefitting Tenley and her family. Fish plates and snow cones were also available for sale at the event.

“We also want to thank our event sponsors for their support,” Taylor said. More than 40 sponsors contributed to the event. “We particularly want to thank the city of Robertsdale, Robertsdale Police Department and Fire Department for helping out. We are going to make this an annual event and we’re already looking forward to 2017.”

Sponsors for the event were Hub City Printing, Villaggio Grill, Ginny Lane Bar and Grill, Stastka Insurance, Gavi Giles Audio Visual Integration, Courtyard Salon, Berkshire Hathaway - Cheryl Russell, Billy’s Seafood, Safe Harbor Seafood, Aquila Seafood, Blalock Seafood, Baldwin County Medical Reserve Corps, Baldwin Tractor & Equipment Kubota, Alfa Insurance Carl Davis, K.b.danz, GooRoo’s Grill, Knockout Pest & Termite, Eastern Shore Urgent Care Center, Dallas Drilling, Furniture City, Rodan + Fields Independent Consultant Lauren Hester, The Wondering Lilly, Byrd Air LLC, Orange Beach Weddings, Coca Cola Distributors, Wolf Bay Lodge, Shear Impressions Hair Salon, Diegmann & Henderson OBGYN, Printing Pros, Morgan’s Ice, Racine’s Feed, Garden & Supply Inc., Back On Track Chiropractic & Wellness Center, Martiniere Landscape & Design, Rob’s Garage, Echotech, Medstar Emergency Medical Services LLC, L.A.
