ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — A Texas man was arrested Sunday and charged in connection with the robbery of RBC Bank in Robertsdale on Friday.

Michael Jon Watton, 28, of Dayton, Texas, was taken into custody at 8 p.m. Sunday by Robertsdale Police and charged with robbery in the first degree.

Arrested at his grandmother’s residence on County Road 36 in Summerdale, RPD Sgt. Rex Bishop some money was recovered along with a black Jeep Cherokee that matched the description of a vehicle police believed was used in the robbery. Robertsdale Police were able to follow a tip received from the F.B.I. hotline, and used surveillance video and pictures taken at the scene on Friday.

Because the investigation is ongoing, a specific money amount cannot be released at this time, Bishop said.

The vehicle, belonging to Watton’s fiancé, was scheduled to be processed and released back to her by Tuesday, Bishop said, because she had no involvement or knowledge about the robbery. She will be returning to Texas.

In the area visiting relatives and seeking employment, Watton was making plans to return to Texas, Bishop said, when the arrest occurred. It is believed his mother also lives around this area, but had no knowledge of Watton’s involvement in the robbery.

Bishop said the arrest went smoothly with no resistance from Watton, but his grandmother was visibly upset and had not seen any news reports about the robbery and had no idea he was involved in any of it.

Taken to the Baldwin County Correctional Facility, Watton’s case will be handed over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, where they will decide if federal charges will be filed. Bishop said Watton had prior out of state arrests, but none for robbery and no motive has been established yet.

Thanks to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department, the F.B.I., Fresh Produce and Sweat Tires in Robertsdale for video and pictures, a quick arrest was able to be made, Bishop said.

“We were able to get some good information that lead us to the suspect through video, footprints, pictures and viewer tips. I am very glad we were able to get him,” Bishop said.

This is the first robbery in Robertsdale since Feb. 12, 1956, RPD Chief Brad Kendrick said, where they got away with $300 to $500. “And back then, that was a huge amount of money.”

“Because of good communication and everyone working together, we were able to get to him quickly,” Kendrick said.

The Branch Manager for RBC Bank was contacted, but no statement was available at this time.
