ROBERTSDALE, Alabama --- It’s a tie!

Steve Metz and Jean Fontaine, both of Silverhill, tied for first place honors in the George P. Thames Senior Center’s Third Annual Soup Contest held Friday, Feb. 24 at the senior center in Robertsdale.

Metz prepared old fashioned potato soup while Fontaine won with Italian wedding soup. Sharron Ellison of Robertsdale finished second with her swamp soup and Barbara Lawson of Robertsdale was third with shrimp and okra gumbo.

The first place contestants each received a $10 cash prize, with $5 going for the other two prize winners. Prizes also included a dish cloth in corresponding colors, blue for first place, red for second and white for third. All contestants received a combination vegetable brush/peeler.

A total of seven participants vied for prizes in Friday’s competition. Mary Ann Gould of Robertsdale prepared chili; Loretta Johnson of Fairhope submitted sausage noodle soup; Becky Hayes of Loxley prepared corn beef hash.

“It’s growing,” said Senior Center Director Sarah Duncan. “The first year we had five contestants and last year six.”

Judges for the competition were Robertsdale Mayor Charles Murphy, Mary Carolyn McDaniel and Jamie Mangion with the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce.
