Imagine daydreams becoming full-blown, vivid, living color reality. Think of replacing negative, limiting thoughts with empowering ideas that increase potential to exponential heights. Envision inner harmony capable of directing people to greater health.
Positive visualization, a technique where an individual can imagine whatever they want to manifest, can change emotions that subsequently have a physical effect on the body. With this tool of consciousness, you give the ideas, image and feeling of positive energy, by focusing on it regularly until it becomes reality. In fact, daydreaming, fantasizing, mental rehearsal, imagery, positive thinking and imagining all examples of visualization. Through patterns of directed repetition, one learns to create a perception of reality. In essence, an individual becomes what they think by learning to control what happens in their brain.
It is thought that positive visualization is the single best thing a person can do because it permeates every single cell of their life. My friend, Dr. Gurusahay Khalsa, acupuncturist and director of the Yoga Institute in Atlanta, Georgia, says this. “Positive visualization becomes a neurological pathway that is created in the mind. If a person can imagine something the neurons have gone down that pathway at least once and it becomes easier every time after that.”
The law of attraction states that whatever a person gives their attention, energy, focus and concentration whether wanted or unwanted becomes reality. Through positive visualization an individual could begin to see, hear and experience positive outcomes in their mind. Ultimately, the thoughts playing on the video in the mind will have a direct impact on the behavior.
Positive visualization has been a routine with me for the last 30 years but more so in the past eight years due to my stroke. Speaking from experience is a very powerful health tool. I learned this not as a psychological method in graduate school but from the physician of the Dali Lama, Yoshi Donden, whom I studied with several months in Tibet early on in my career. During this time I remember him saying there were five principles to remember that make this system work.
Present: always think in the present as if it were fact already.
Positive: always think positive thoughts.
Personal: always think personal thoughts just for you.
Perform: always think in highly emotionally, charged words to describe goals.
Precision: always think in sharp, vivid, detailed wishes, that become goals.
These have been very helpful to me as a doctor and can be just as beneficial to anyone if they will take the time and effort to meditate, ponder and pray, ask of yourself earnestly when there is a necessity in life. I have learned this ability does not come when asked frivolously.
