SUMMERDALE, Ala. - The summer reading program, “One World, Many Stories,” was held each Tuesday morning in June at the Marjorie Younce Snook Public Library in Summerdale.
The children learned about different places in the world each week, featuring Hawaii, Alaska, China and Africa. They read books, made crafts and had refreshments relating to each place.
Entertainers were Chris Rumble, David Stephens and the Zinghoppers. The last program was held at the Summerdale Splash Park. Awards and goody bags were given to all participants with Jayson Kidwell landing the top reader spot at 78 books. Sixty five children registered for the reading program with an average attendance of 40 each week. Everyone received a “One World Many Stories” t-shirt. Over 500 books were read making this our most successful reading program yet.
Summer Movie Month was held each Friday afternoon in July. The children enjoyed lunch and a movie to escape the hot July sun. Featured movies and lunches were “Shrek: Forever After” with hotdogs and chips; “A Cry in the Wild” with chicken quesadillas and chips with salsa; “Snow Dogs” with chicken fingers and fries; and “Song of the South” with pizza.
The MYSPL received a $1,500 grant from Dollar General Literacy Program and a $500 grant from Wells Fargo to help support the summer programs. Other sponsors included: Vallartas, Peng Garden, Willie T’s, Dominos, Hadley Pest Control, Chick-fil-A and Waffle House. Volunteers were Barbara Gilley, Cathy Kennicott, Roberta Mullek, Lynn Ferguson, Norma Giles, Rosaline Hadley and Talon Gaddy. The Marjorie Younce Snook Public Library would like to say thank you to our volunteers and sponsors for helping to make this summer’s programs fantastic.
The library has many interesting programs planned for September, October, November and December. Please call 251-989-2011 for information, dates and times of future programs.
