The smell of sweet success

Spanish Fort head football coach Bryant Vincent was obviously pleased to be the coach for the Toros in the opening of the regular season Aug. 31 with the school's first ever varsity victory.

But there could be no denying that Saturday, defeating a region opponent, one used to winning and coached by one of the best high school coaches in the state in Anthony Schambeau, that the grins were bigger, but so were the tears.

After investing almost three years of hard work and effort, the Toros seniors are far from done. But the fruits of their effort, and that of their parents, teachers, boosters and coaches are deservedly sweet.

"The first one was sweet, this one is sweet, too," Vincent said. "Heck, any win is a sweet win when you are at where we are in our program. The biggest thing — I'm proud of — is our kids. Because we never gave up, we never gave up. We kept fighting, we kept fighting and i just can't say enough about this coaching staff and these kids."

Vincent, a Kentucky native, said a lot of teams would have folded under similar circumstances, but not these Toros.

" And that is a credit to these coaches and this community and these kids."

The Toros now get ready to play another high power offensive team in the Vigor Wolves.
