ORANGE BEACH, Ala.— City officials are always talking about giving visitors the “Disney World effect” when they arrive for vacations.
The city plans everything from sprucing up city entrances, keeping roadways clean and blooming to banners lining the streets in welcome.
New this summer season will be a real theme-park effect courtesy of The Wharf. A twice-nightly light show will stream from one end of Main Street to the other.
“I will absolutely promise you this,” Jon Adcock of PTE productions said during a recent Rotary Club presentation. “Living in Orlando and working all over the world creating these shows, this rivals any theme-park show we’ve ever put in, any other entertainment park show we’ve put in. Art (Favre) has spared no expense to ensure that this is absolutely amazing.”
Adcock is overseeing the show’s development and its construction is ongoing. The show will roll out on Memorial Day weekend. Favre is the owner of the retail space which he bought in November of 2011. He later bought the marina and amphitheater as well.
“This is something that is not just for the people who live here but will bring people in,” Adcock said. “This is the stuff we do at theme parks. We’ve actually got real live audio of the Blue Angels. We’re a very authentic company.”
Behind the show of lights, the sounds of the presentation will be catching, Adcock said.
“It’s a sound system that is rivaled by theme park sound systems,” he said. “It’s about a 150,000-watt sound system. It’s not meant to blow people’s minds and make it too loud, but when you stand on the street you can hear the sound from all around you.”
The lighting and sound will course up the street in a synchronized display.
“The lighting we are putting in is on the sides of the buildings and the top of the buildings,” he said. “On the trees we are doing LED netting for all the palm trees as well. So for the roughly 400 feet or about two blocks there closer to the condos, if you stand out in the middle of the street on any given night, you’ll basically hear sounds from all around and you’ll have this light show.”
Showings will be at 8:30 and 10 p.m. nightly with the first of those concentrates on the beach, the Gulf and nautical themes.
“The first one I call it Aqua,” Adcock said. “It’s an amazing show and it’s all about The Wharf, it’s all about Alabama. It’s all about fishing and basically coming here in the summertime.
“For families with young kids it’s got a lot of great things. It’s got a pirate piece in it, it’s got fishing, it’s got the billfish tournament in it. It’s all about having fun in the summer. That goes off at 8:30 every night and it’s absolutely beautiful.”
At one point in this showing boat images will actually move down Main Street on the buildings.
“The one image that we absolutely had to have was the boats,” Adcock said. “So you will see that truck down the street. We’ll have some sea shells and some things. Then it sinks and now we’re all under water and we’re going to have these underwater bubbles and colors and it sounds like it’s underwater.
“And then you come up through the waves and people are surfing. It’s perfectly set to the region. You’re in Orange Beach and this absolutely makes sense as you’re standing in Orange Beach because all this stuff could happen here.”
While here won’t be images of Blue Angels in the show, the sound will reverberate from one end of the street to the other in a virtual fly by during the 10 p.m. showing.
“Literally when the boat goes down the street or when the Blue Angels fly down the street, you will hear it start down on one end of the street and it will fly at you,” Adcock said. “So you will hear and see it. It will completely immerse you. If you watch 10 times from a different spot, it’s going to be different every time.”
The late showing will have more patriotic themes.
“It has a lot of patriotic songs, a lot of good storytelling to it,” Adcock said. “We’ve got a lot of people coming from other areas so we actually put together a tribute to the five SEC BCS champions. We’ve got the Blue Angels in there as well. That’s a great patriotic piece to make the visitors feel good when they come here.”
