1. A massive tornado ripped through the tiny community of Silverhill in March, causing major damage to several structures, including the town’s 80-year-old landmark, the Little Bohemian Hall. A group of concerned residents, led by former mayor Frankie Kucera, formed the Save the Little Hall Committee. After several meetings, the Town Council voted in November to support the committee’s efforts to move the structure to Paul Anderson Park across from Town Hall. An account has been set up at United Bank with the goal of raising $30,000 for the project.
2. RHS alumnus Tim Cook, who, after serving several times as the acting CEO of computer giant Apple Inc., was named the company’s top man after founder and CEO Steve Jobs stepped down in August because of illness. Cook, a 1978 graduate of Robertsdale High School, began working for Apple in 1998 and was the company’s chief operating officer. Jobs, who founded the company in the 1970s, continued to serve as chairman of the board until his death in October.
3. A new principal came to Robertsdale High School as Spanish Fort Middle School Principal Craig Ross was appointed as interim principal in October following the retirement of Theresa Bryant. Bryant, a graduate of RHS, had served the past 26 years as a teacher, assistant principal and the last 12 years as principal. While the school system will take applications for a permanent replacement in the spring, it is expected that Ross’s appointment will be made permanent at that time.
