FAIRHOPE, Alabama — The Fairhope Pirates are still looking for their first win of the 2016 season after the Theodore Bobcats spoiled Homecoming handing the Pirates a 35-10 loss Friday night on W.C. Majors Field at Fairhope Municipal Stadium.
After failing to score on a 22-yard fieldgoal try on their first possession, the Bobcats held Fairhope to three-and-out, then got the ball back on a botched punt attempt that gave them the ball at the 28.
Theodore scored one play later on a 28-yard pass play from Errick Wells Jr. to Isaiah Hayes. Garrett Akridge booted the extra point to give the Bobcats a 7-0 lead with 5:10 to go in the opening period.
The Fairhope offense again failed to get a first down, but avoided another score as Troy Odom and Ty’ron Willis stopped Jujuan Hernandez short of a first down to get the ball back at their own 20.
But after gaining one first down, Dylan Casstevens was sacked back to the Fairhope 29-yard line on third and five and the Pirates were forced to punt to the Theodore 39.
The Pirate defense again robbed Theodore of a scoring opportunity when John Sherrell recovered a Bobcat fumble at the Fairhope 41-yard line but Fairhope would fumble on a run that would have given the Pirates a first down at the Theodore 26.
The turnover would turn into points for the Bobcats, who drove 74 yards in seven plays with Wells taking the ball himself 14 yards for the score and Akridge’s PAT gave Theodore a 14-0 lead with 4:57 left in the half.
Fairhope punted again after gaining a first down on its next possession, but thought they would get new life when Jaylon Jones recovered a Bobcat fumble, but Dalton Lynch intercepted Casstevens’ pass taking the ball back 75 yards for a score. The PAT gave the Bobcats a 21-0 lead with just under 30 seconds to go in the half.
The Pirate defense forced a punt to start the second half and turned it into points with Darnell Bell and Casstevens running the ball for a first down before a Bobcat penalty put the ball at the edge of the Red Zone.
But the drive would go backward from there and Cole Deeds booted a 42-yard fieldgoal to cut the lead to 21-3 with 7:27 to go in the third.
Brett Howell then tackled Hernandez after a short return to pin the Bobcats inside their own 10 at the eight and Theodore managed just eight yards on the drive with Ryan Dunbar and Odom tackling the Bobcat QB for a loss on third-and-1 giving the Pirates the ball back in Theodore territory at the 49.
A 12-yard run by Bell was followed by a penalty on third-and-5 to give Fairhope the ball at the 27,. Casstevens then connected on back-to-back passes to Kyle Kinggard and Bell before Bell rolled in from nine yards out. Deeds added the extra point to cut the lead to 21-10 with 2:54 left in the third.
But Theodore would tack on two scores in the fourth quarter, one on a 16-yard pass play with 4:59 to play, then scored again 49 seconds later following an onside kick.
Fairhope’s next drive stalled at the Bobcat 32 and Theodore was able to run out the clock from there handing the Pirates their fourth loss of the season, third in 7A Region 1 play.
While the Pirates play out of region next, it doesn’t get any easier, facing upper Eastern Shore rival Daphne while seeking to defend their War on the Eastern Shore title Sept. 16 at home.
