Pastor John Adolph Thies, 90, a native of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and a resident of Elberta, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010.

He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army from 1940-1941, and the Navy from 1941-1945.

He was a radio engineer and announcer in Poplar Bluff, Mo. 

He was a 1960 graduate of Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, Ill. He served congregations in Woodland, Ind., from 1960-1965; Newton, N.C., from 1965-1969; Mobile from 1969-1977; St. Mark’s, Elberta from 1977-1985; filled vacancies in Elberta from 1985-1986; Milton, Fla., from 1987-1988; and Spanish Fort, from 1990-1991.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Baumann Thies of Elberta; three sons, David (Charae) Thies of Rockford, Ill., Daniel (Evangeline) Thies of Milton, Fla., and Andrew (Sandra) Thies of Huntsville; brother, Walter Thies of Poplar Bluff; 10 grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation begins at 1 p.m. with funeral services at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Elberta with Pastor Keith Ringers officiating. Interment will follow at St. Mark’s Lutheran Cemetery.
