Third annual "O Delta Day" set for June 2

Plans are already underway for the third annual "O Delta Day" set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 2 at Lower Bryant Pavilion in north Baldwin County. The day’s activities will include a fishing tournament, river races, live entertainment, fish and chicken plates, a silent auction and more as funds are raised to benefit the Leah Ann Overstreet Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The fund, established in Overstreet’s memory, awards scholarships to senior members of the Baldwin County High School band. This school year, the committee is awarding $5,000 in scholarships using proceeds from the 2011 event.

To date, the committee has awarded $11,000 in scholarships to BCHS students.

"Mrs. O" was principal of Delta Elementary School, a founding member and president of the North Baldwin Coalition for Excellence in Education. Her son, A’Lanson Hoffman, was a member of the BCHS band and went on to play with the trumpet with the University of Alabama’s Million Dollar Band.

Items are being collected for the silent auction, which organizers said is a major part of the fundraiser. The silent auction will be open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. To donate, call Patsy Robinson at 251-455-9616.

Catfish and chicken lunches, provided by Street’s Restaurant and Stagecoach Cafe, will be sold on-site and carry-outs will be available. The dinners will be available beginning at 11 a.m. and the cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children.

This year’s event will include some new features including tube races, a "Rubber Duck" race and sack races. Each race entry fee is $5.

The tube races will be open to all ages, and participants will race in the river to determine winners. The tube races will begin at noon.

Patrons can sponsor a rubber duck and all ducks will be released into the water and the first duck to cross the finish line will win a cash prize for its sponsor. The ducks can be sponsored in advance or the day at the event up until the 1 p.m. race time.

Returning will be the popular River Raft Race where competitors maneuver their handcrafted rafts along the river to the finish line. The raft cannot have a power engine of any kind. The River Raft Race will kick off at 2 p.m. For more information about the River Raft race, call Gerald Malone at 251-937-3306.

A fishing tournament is also planned, beginning at daylight and weigh-in at 2 p.m. The cost is $25 per person with a maximum of two anglers per boat. For more details on the fishing tournament, call Mike Holt at 251-359-3450 or Mary Blackmon at 251-751-9216.

Out of the water, there will be plenty of activity, too, with a silent auction, live entertainment and the "O What a Dessert" contest. The dessert competition is open to all and winners will be selected in different categories. Desserts should arrive by 10:45 a.m. for judging and the winners will be announced that day. After judging, samples of the desserts will be available for purchase.
