This weekend: bluegrass meets classic cars

DAPHNE — The Wayfarers, an Eastern-Shore based, group, will perform for the fourth year at the Bluegrass Festival, to be held Sunday at the Daphne Civic Complex Plaza.

The Dog River Boys and Delta Reign, both from Mobile, also will perform.

A Bluegrass band usually includes an acoustic guitar, a banjo, a mandolin, a fiddle, a dobro — a resonator guitar — and a bass fiddle, according to The Wayfarers member Steve Bauer.

“Bluegrass is like hyped-up folk music,” said Bauer, a member of the band since its 2000 inception.

“It’s been a tradition to do the Bluegrass Festival,” Recreation Programs Coordinator Megan Matrone said.

“We want to do as much as possible for the community and have a fun and relaxing time,” she added.

In conjunction with the Bluegrass Festival, Cruisin’ on the Shore will have its second celebration.

“Bluegrass is held every year, and the classic car show was added to the festival last year to draw more of a crowd,” Matrone said.

The cars registered so far are all from 1971 or earlier, Matrone said.

“It’s the older, restored cars,” she said of vehicles that will be displayed.

The public will vote for “Best of Show,” Matrone said.

Each attendee will get one voting card to turn in after deciding which vehicle they think should win, Matrone said. The winner will be announced after the last band performs.

Vehicles must be registered by today and can be done so by calling the recreation department or visiting www.daphneal.com.

The event is from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 21. Admission is free.

The recreation department asks that everyone brings their own seating. Concessions will be available.
