DAPHNE, Ala. — Looking for a furry companion? The Daphne Animal Shelter will present a “Yappy Hour” pet adoption event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the shelter located on 7145 Johnson Road.
The shelter had 10 dogs and 13 cats available for adoption at press time, according to Maria Nicholson, administrative technician for support services at the Daphne Police Department, which runs the shelter.
Currently, the shelter can hold 20 dogs and 23 cats, she said.
The animals include feral cats collected throughout he community and lost pets whose owners haven’t claimed them, she said. The shelter also holds animals whose owners could no longer care for them.
The Daphne Police Department and Daphne Utilities will provide free refreshments at the event, Nicholson said.
Saturday’s event coincides with The 1st Annual “Pick-A-Pet Fest,” which is hosted by Maddie’s Pet Rescue Project of Baldwin County and sponsored by The Wright/ Steed Team of Coldwell Banker United, Realtors. That dog and cat adoption event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fairhope Campus of Faulkner State Community College located at 440 Fairhope Ave.
Both events will take place, rain or shine and residents can stop by the location nearest them, Nicholson said.
“We all work together on the pet adoptions,” she said. “Instead of transporting the animals down to the Fairhope location, we’re gonna have our shelter open and then they (interested people) can just come by both locations.”
“Yappy Hour” pet adoptions at the Daphne Animal Shelter will become a monthly event, Nicholson said. The events, to be held the last Saturday of each month, will officially kick off in January.
“We don’t have another adoption in November or December because we’re running into the holiday time frame there,” she said.
However, she added, the shelter will be open Nov. 4–10, during National Animal Shelter Week.
“We’re just asking people to stop by … and look at the animals and see what they can do to help the animal shelter,” she said.
