This weekend: Yappy Hour pet adoptions

DAPHNE, Ala. — Yappy Hour pet adoptions at the Daphne Animal Shelter will be held Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. There will be an open house with coffee and hot chocolate.

The shelter currently has several large dogs and about 15 cats of many colors. Dogs cost $75 and cats cost $50. The adoption comes with a spay or neuter voucher, Rhonda Jones, animal control officer, said.

There’s no limit on how many pets one family can adopt, organizers said. However, the shelter asks that prospective pet owners have sufficient shelter for the pets.

“We try to fit the animal with the person,” Jones said.

“We ask that you have a fenced yard if you don’t keep the pet inside.”

Animal shelters stay full because of large amounts of stray animals, Daphne Police Lt. Ric Yelding said. Many strays are caused by pet owners not spaying or neutering their animals, he said.

Another problem is that lost pets can’t find their way home, Yelding said.

“If you’re a pet owner, get your pet licensed with the City,” he said. “That way we’ll have information for the animals and can get them back to their rightful owners.”

Strays also come from breeders that can’t sell all the offspring, Maria Nicholson, Daphne PD administrative technician for support services, said.

Also, owners may have a lifestyle change and bring animals to the shelter so that others can properly care for them, she said.

“Caregivers may not be in a position to continue to provide for the animals,” Nicholson said. “They bring them to the shelter in hopes that they’ll be adopted.”

Regular pet adoption hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The shelter has enough cages for 16 dogs and 23 cats and are often near capacity, Amelia Alawine, Daphne Animal Shelter technician, said.

The animal shelter has Yappy Hour pet adoptions the last Saturday of every month. Yappy Hour also offers children’s activities and refreshments. Animal control officers will also give tips about pet care, Nicholson said.

“Children are the main reason that families get pets,” she said. “We wanted something fun for them.”

But above all, Yappy Hour adoptions serve one purpose.

“Our goal is to cut down on euthanizations,” Yelding said.
