Thomas Michael Tyrrell, 68, a native and lifelong resident of Mobile, passed away March 4, 2015 of heart failure.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Gerald Tyrrell and Marie Therese (Fernandez).
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Patricia KoskoTyrrell; daughters, Laura Marie Tyrrell Ford (Lawrence Giddens Ford Jr. “Russ”) and Stephanie Elina Tyrrell Gantt (Jason Edward Gantt); his grandchildren, Lawrence “Giddens” Ford III, Louise Tyrrell Ford and Edward Weinman Gantt; his sister, Elina Tyrrell Darling (Gordon); and a number of cousins, several nieces, nephews and many friends, all of whom he loved very much.
Tommy attended St. Ignatius and Little Flower Elementary and graduated from McGill Institute in 1965.
He served in the United States Marine Corps, and is a graduate of the University of South Alabama with a degree in both accounting and business. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
Tommy had a longtime career in the industrial construction business and in local, state and national politics.
His love for his community was evident through his civic involvement, including serving on many boards throughout his career: the Alabama Builders and Contractors Association as president; the Mobile Tennis Center, the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, Senior Bowl Committee, a co-founder of Bayfest Inc., the Board of Mobile Area Water and Sewer Service and the Board of Equalization.
His devotion to his spiritual life was strong as he was a member of the Stephens Ministry and a lifelong member of St. Ignatius Parish.
He held a passion for Mobile’s Mardi Gras and was actively involved in many mystic organizations as well as numerous social clubs throughout the area.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 3704 Springhill Ave. in Mobile on Monday, March 9, 2015.
Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. in the Marian Center and mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Tommy's memory may be made to the Home of Grace, 394 Aldock Road, Eight Mile, AL 36613.
