Thomas Wright “Tommy” Underwood Jr., a native of Foley and a resident of Decatur, died Monday, May 30, 2011.
He was a true story of a local boy becoming a great man who loved and served his community. From playing football for Foley High School to graduating from law school, he was well known and well liked.
He practiced law for 35 years in his community of Foley. He was the judge for the city of Foley for 27 years. He had other civic duties such as a strong member of the Foley Rotary Club. He served on the Board of Directors of South Baldwin Hospital, now South Baldwin Regional Medical Center, and countless other duties.
He didn’t search for the lime light. His love for the outdoors was profound, but not as strong as his love for a Harley Davidson. He was reserved, at least most of the time, quiet and a family man. His wife, Junie, and his two children, Gavin and Ashley, were his priorities. His father was his best friend and stook with him through thick and thin. He loved his family.
He was preceded in death by his childhood sweetheart and bride of 40 years, Dorothy “Junie” Chason Underwood.
Survivors include his father, Thomas W. Underwood Sr. of Foley; son, Gavin Underwood of Decatur; daughter, Ashley McDonald of Crestview, Fla.; four grandchildren, Lynsey and Anna Underwood of Decatur, Cecilyn and Garrett McDonald of Crestview.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 6 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Foley. A private interment will be held at a later date.
The family requests memorial donations be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 506 N. Pine St., Foley, AL 36535, or The American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.
