A review of Roman Street's Christmas concert
Fairhope talents, Noah and his brother, Joshua, Thompson, (with childhood drummer-friend, Daniel Brett) are backbones of the Roman Street band who have developed a music style that is known as a vibrant age of music. During this particular concert, the talents of J.B. Galle, bass, was added and the opening act consisted of violinist Melody Duncan with her brother Christopher Duncan on keyboard. The performance was seasonally warm and inviting. Both musicians are accomplished artists and played traditional, melodic music that led into the Roman Street concert.
On Thursday and Friday nights, Dec. 13 and 14, the auditorium of USA (University of Southern Alabama, Baldwin County) rocked with a musical sound developed into Roman Street’s own creative style.
Notes from Christmas Rumba, the band’s holiday album that debuted last year, brought new life to familiar Christmas tunes and wowed audiences with their unique sound.
In this quaint town of Fairhope, an outstanding sound has taken a leap forward and vibrant jazz is being born.
Roman Street band takes its name from RömerStrasse, a street near Zürich, Switzerland where the Thompsons go each year to study with their development teacher. The use of their time has been well spent developing a remarkable sound which is unique and vital: made up of classical, gypsy, contemporary jazz, Latin, funk, and nuevo flamenco. The blend is electrifying. Roman Street stands for what’s new in entertainment.
‘Smooth Jazz Chart’ is a national leader in posting what’s new for the world to hear. On their Chart 2012, they list Roman Street as the “Top ten single recording of the year” …. a well-deserved honor.
Also, “Caravan,” the band’s new single, just hit number 24 for Contemporary Jazz on the Billboard chart’s Top 25 Songs of the Year 2012.
How exciting to be part of this movement; and even more so as it’s coming from our own corner of the world. Therefore, welcome to a new age of music, and thanks to Roman Street for forward thinking and originality.
