The Tatum Family Concert will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11, at 7 p.m., in the Spirit Center of Foley United Methodist Church, 915 N. Pine St. in Foley. All ages are invited to come and be downright entertained by three generations of the Tatum family.
The patriarch of the family, Walter Tatum, has been captivating folks in south Alabama for over 37 years. He was the “Walter” in the band called Walter, Shine and Sometimes John, which played for over five years at Gulf Gate Lodge.
The group disbanded for 20 years. In 2003 a new group formed, Cool Change, which includes Walter, John Andrews, David Horton and Don McPherson.
Greta, Walter’s wife, was a member of the church choir from 1972 to 2000. This wraps up the first Tatum generation.
The Tatum family musical talent only begins with the first generation. Greta and Walter have three adult children — Troy, Scott and Kim, who will all be performing at the concert. All three kids were raised with music as vital to life as breathing, eating and sleeping.
With Walter as the director of the church youth and adult choirs, the kids were singing from a young age.
Scott also started playing the guitar as a child. Scott has published two or three CDs, and will probably have some for sale at the concert.
Troy, who has a beautiful voice, is reluctant to sing in public. He’s agreed to do it, however, for Mama and Papa.
Kim, who has toured with Christian recording artists, will steal the show with her voice and presence.
Both Scott and Kim married music lovers. Scott’s wife, Gwen, was with the Auburn Singers and they both currently sing in their church choir. Kim is married to Don McPherson, who is the bass player in the current band Cool Change. And this wraps up the second Tatum generation.
The singers, all of whom are exceptionally talented, will include Walter from Foley; Troy from Fairhope; Scott and wife, Gwen, from Chattanooga, Tenn. and their two daughters Stacy and Caroline (the third generation); and Kim from Foley.
Scott and his family will do some numbers, including his originals; Scott, Kim and Walter will do trio numbers; Walter will do some of his originals; and Scott, Troy and Kim will form another trio.
The song list includes: “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” “Cool Change,” “Love Will Keep Us Alive,” “It’s Your Love,” “Wide Open Spaces,” “Rocky Mountain High,” “I Want To Know What Love Is,” “The Piano Man” and others.
The concert will run from 7 to 9 p.m., with a 15-minute break between 45-minute sets.
Donations are $10 per person, and can be purchased in advance at FUMC, or at the door.
