ROBERTSDALE, Alabama
— Three members of Robertsdale High School's 2012 senior class are
set to play college football next fall, and two signed letters of
intent in the school's library Wednesday afternoon.
Robertsdale defensive
end Brian Combita and defensive tackle David Dalton signed with
Faulkner University on Wednesday. Quarterback Hunter Vaughn signed
with Savannah State in December and has already enrolled at the
school after graduating from Robertsdale a semester early.
Former Robertsdale
head coach Scott Phelps said he was proud that the three players
had the opportunity to continue playing football and further their
academic studies in college.
Phelps called Dalton
a "tough, physical player."
"David Dalton has
been in the program for four years and he is the type of player who
is gritty and hard-nosed," Phelps said. "He was the leader of our
defense. He is getting a lot bigger and a lot stronger and that's
what attracted Faulkner University to him."
"I like the way they
work together there," Dalton, who plans to study mathematics, said.
"It is a good, upbeat community. I like the offense and the style
of defense they run."
Phelps said Combita
played hard every play during his Robertsdale career.
"His motor never
stops," Phelps said. "He is a good defensive player who is all over
the football field and he made plays for us all year long. That's
one thing that attracted Faulkner to him."
Combita is
considering studying forensic science at Faulkner.
"I like the people,
the coaches, everybody there," he said. "It is a really calm, cool
place. I look forward to being able to graduate from there."
"They are both just
hard-nosed, typical Robertsdale football players," Phelps said.
"They are going to go up there to Faulkner for four years, play
football, study and do what they are supposed to do."
Vaughn took advantage
of Savannah State's early enrollee program.
"He was our
quarterback, our leader," Phelps said. "He had a great year. He is
going to have an opportunity to play there, that's what attracted
him to that school."
