Thursday ‘Coffee’ to highlight Daphne’s history

DAPHNE, Ala. — Coffee with the Mayor will be held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday in Daphne City Hall, and the meeting will highlight Old Methodist Church Museum volunteers and newly discovered time capsules.

Museum volunteers will showcase some of the museum’s attractions and explain stories behind their artifacts.

“Volunteers with the museum, most of them their families have been in Daphne forever,” Mickey Boykin, museum president, said. “I am going to have them bring an item and do a five-minute show-and-tell.”

Photographs, old clothes, copies of Civil War letters and other artifacts will be presented to the audience, Boykin said.

Museum volunteers Emily Hammond, Al Guarisco, Helen Callaway, Helen Baroco, Zadia Pace, Lucy Cunningham, Arba Brown and Camilla Butler will join Boykin for the presentation.

Also tomorrow are plans to have old Daphne families open newly discovered time capsules.

Denise Penry, Public Works accountant, found the envelopes several weeks ago in the Public Works attic; she said she immediately took them to the mayor’s office.

“It was actually in a bunch of old files in the old Public Works and planning building behind City Hall, but that building was knocked down after Hurricane Ivan,” Penry said of the sealed items. “When they moved the stuff to City Hall, it moved along with it.”

Four envelopes are addressed separately to the Jordan, Baggette, Seale, Bertagnolli and Hanson families.

Coffee with the Mayor is held on the final Thursday every other month in City Hall.
