BAY MINETTE — Fullback Donald Taylor and quarterback Luther Sanders ignited a sluggish Baldwin County High School offense in the second half here Friday night and the Tigers’ defense followed suit when BCHS rallied from a 21-8 halftime deficit for a 36-21 playoff-clinching win over Satsuma.
Taylor rushed for 98 of his 108 yards in the second half and scored twice on runs of 40 and 7 yards. Sanders threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Emmanuel Stevens and scored on a 3-yard run in addition to dashing in from 11 yards out for the Tigers’ first-half touchdown. Sophomore running back Charleston Gandy scored the first BCHS touchdown of the second half on a 9-yard run.
After overcoming a fumble on the opening kickoff and a safety due to an errant punt snap once they got the ball back, the Gators went ahead 7-2 on quarterback J.T Baxter’s 1-yard sneak with 2:27 left in the first quarter. The touchdown was set up by a blocked punt that Terance Mitchell caught in the air behind the line of scrimmage and carried to the 1.
The Gators pushed the lead to 14-2 on Greg Brown’s 3-yard run the finished off a 60 yard drive with 90:22 left in the first half. Baldwiun County answered back with a 68-yard drive that was culminated by Sanders’ 11-yard run on a rollout around right end.
Sanders scored with 4:29 left in the first half and Trace Zarr kicked the extra point.
Satsuma came right back with a 70-yard scoring drive and built its 21-8 halftime lead on Baxter’s 24-yard touchdown pass to Josh Prine with 7.2 seconds left in the first half. Kaleb Wilkinson kicked all three Gators extra points
Following the halftime homecoming ceremonies, Baldwin County came out and covered 72 yards in just five plays to begin whittling into the deficit. Arthello Bush had the big gainer, a 48-yard run to the Satsuma 9. Gandy scored on the next play with 10:11 still to play in the third quarter.
BCHS missed a scoring opportunity after Diamond Hollis recovered a Satsuma fumble three plays after the ensuing kickoff, but the Tigers scored on the first play of their next two possessions after forcing three-and-out series to take the lead. Sanders’ 35-yard hook-up over the middle to a wide-open STevens and Zarr’s PAT put Baldwin County ahead 2-21 with 6:16 left in the third quarter.
On the next series, Taylor shot through a hole up the middle and went 40 yards to the end zone,s coring with 5:02 showing. Another lost fumble thwarted the next two BCHS possessions, but the Tigers after getting the ball back with two sacks that stopped the Gators’ drive at the SHS 18, overcame an illegal-block penalty to score again on Taylor’s 7-yard burst up the middle with 1:33 left inn the game.
Gandy added 67 yards on 14 carries, Bush 61 on five and Sanders 32 on five for the Tigers, who piled up 276 yards rushing in improving to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in 6A Region 2, clinching a berth in the state playoffs for the first time in three years. Satsuma dropped to 2-5 and 2-3.
Baldwin County hosts unbeaten Region 2 leader Foley next Friday while Satsuma travels to Fairhope.
