Title company co-owner arrested for theft

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — Sharon Little, a co-owner of Plantation Title Company, was arrested earlier this month on charges of theft.

“We had a report filed by James Sweet (one of the company’s co-owners. The company is also owned by Jeff Crabtree, according to police) and we investigated,” said Sgt. Rex Bishop of the Robertsdale Police Department.

According to Bishop, and records from the Baldwin County Corrections Center, Little, who listed a Bay Minette address, was charged with “theft of property” in the first degree. Bishop said more criminal charges were probably forthcoming as the investigation continued. He believed that Little has taken “more than $200,000” in cash, raiding the company’s trust and escrow accounts.

“It appears the money was spent gambling,” said Bishop, who added that police were able to pick up Little’s trail in Mississippi and Alabama gambling facilities. He added that more criminal charges may be filed.

“We’re still sorting everything out,” said Bishop. While most of Plantation Title’s customers have been covered by Plantation’s underwriter, First American Title Company, out of Birmingham. Bishop says that he knows of at at least one customer, a woman from Oregon who may be completely out of luck.

“Funds from a sale were never sent to her,” said Bishop. The loss, he says is about $70,000.

“First American Title Company has auditors and are working hand in hand with us,” said Bishop. He added that Plantation was trying to contact all the customers involved in the alleged theft, but if someone has done business recently with Plantation, they should contact him at the Robertsdale Police Department, (251) 947-2228, or First American Title Company at (205) 879-1818.
