Top job for Fairhope retiree raises questions

FAIRHOPE, Alabama—According to documents obtained by The Fairhope Courier, city retiree Eddie Boyett’s return to a top municipal job raises several issues: his application is dated a day before the position was announced; he was hired for a position he did not specify; and his start date began before the normal one-week period ran for posting the announcement.

His application is dated Nov. 14 in two places—on the application itself and under his signature on a form stating the application is true and complete.

But the job was not announced until Nov. 15, according to records.

And his job application leaves blank the place for identifying the “position applied for.”

Nevertheless, Boyett was hired as the city’s “recreation center supervisor” to start Nov. 21, according to staff.

“On that particular job, we just put that up on the bulletin board at the rec center because we were going to let the ones that were already involved with recreation out there apply,” Mayor Tim Kant said. “And Eddie had asked to be considered. So we just let the in-house people, plus Eddie, apply for the job.”

Boyett was the only person to apply, according to staff.

According to personnel rules, “Positions will generally be posted for a minimum of one week.”

Had that rule been followed, he would not have been hired to start until Nov. 22, at a minimum.

“This place has always been near and dear to me,” Boyett said about why he returned to city employment after two years of retirement.
