DAPHNE, Ala. — The Bayside Academy Lady Admirals moved from the first phase of the 2011 3A volleyball playoffs, the Area 1 tournament, to the Region A level with a 3-0 home-court sweep of T.R. Miller in the finals 25-7, 25-10, 25-10 Monday.

Bayside opens play Saturday against Trinity Presbyterian at Montgomery Academy in the eight-team regional and must survive the cut to advance to the Sweet-16 substate round next week. Only the substate winners quailify for the Elite eight state championship.

The No.1-Ranked Lady Admirals are at 56-7 and poised not only to earn their 10th-straight state title, but to set a new all-time victory record as well — and must win every remaining match to do so. Seven wins to a decade of consecutive state crowns and seven wins to a new season record of 63 victories.

Bayside head coach Ann Schilling said her 3A team, which defeated both the No. 1, 6A and 5A teams in one day two days earlier at Homewood in the Margaret Blalock Memorial tourney, has a good chance to make history at both the state and school level if they keep playing to the best of their abilities.

“We played well tonight,” she said Monday. “We just have to stay focused from here on out. We have to continue to build on what we’ve already done. It’s a tough road from this point on. I like our chances if we play to our potential. I was pleased by how we played this evening though.”

Virginia Pittman had 13 kills, 12 aces and 6 digs; Gabby Deshotel added 11 kills, a block and 8 aces; Jhalen Caffey also had 12 aces with 10 kills and 4 digs; Morgan Delaney had 6 kills, 7 aces; Harper Morrison added 6 kills; setter Sydney Chandler had 40 assists with 4 kills and 4 aces and lone Admiral senior Victoria Smith recorded 18 digs at libero and served 10 aces.

In the semifinals, Bayside eliminated Washington County 25-6, 25-7, 25-8.

As area runner up, T.R. Miller (24-4) also moved on to the 3A Region A tournament Saturday at Montgomery Academy. Miller made it to the finals by eliminating Clarke County 21-25, 25-4, 26-24, 25-15 in the semifinals. Bayside meets Trinity at 10 a.m.

Tuning up for the title run, the Lady Admirals won the Blaylock Memorial Invitational Tournament at Homewood last weekend to close the regular season by claiming the Gold Division with a 25-15, 15-25, 15-13 championship match win over St. Paul's.

The Lady Admirals swept through pool play in the Blaylock battle of top-ranked teams defeating Briarwood Christian (5A), Oak Mountain (6A), Benjamin Russell (5A) and Vestavia Hills (6A) to advance to the Gold Division brackets.

Then they defeated No. 1-ranked 6A McGill-Toolen Catholic in the quarterfinals and Hoover (6A) in the semis before meeting the No. 1 ranked and defending 5A state champion Saints in the final.
