Toros advance with sweep of Saints

MOBILE—Whoever said " 'Only love' can break a heart," was not a Toro fan on the Hill 12 months ago.

"Until you've had your heart broken you cannot be a champion, and we had ours broken last year," said Spanish Fort coach Tommy Walker after the Toros defeated St. Paul's on Bussie Greer Field in Mobile 7-1 and 9-0 Monday to sweep the second-round 5A baseball playoffs.

"We thought all year long we had a chance to knock off St. Paul's, but until the king is dead, he is still the king," Walker said. The Saints came from behind last year in the playoffs to knock the Toros out of the third round.

Good pitching and timely hitting sealed the deal this time. First-game winner Chris Beasley and nightcap winner Rocky McCord allowed a total of five Saints hits all night.

"Both guys were just masterful," Walker said. "(Pitching) Coach (Richard) Kelly did a great job with both of those guys."

At the plate, Patrick McGavin was 5-for-7 on the night with a grand slam in the opener and a two-run homer in the second game. McCord also had a homer in each game.

As of Tuesday morning, The Toros (26-10) will either host Briarwood Christian or travel to Shelby County on Friday. A BC win will mean a home stand for SFHS.

The Saints took an early 1-0 lead in the opener but it would be their only run of the series.

Beasley remained undefeated at 6-0 with a three-hitter and seven strikeouts in the first game while McCord (7-2) tossed a two-hitter and struckout 10.

Runnels who tripled in each game drove in two runs and McCord followed with a solo homer in the bottom of the first. McCord hit a two-run homer in game two and Wes Runnels had an RBI single.

McGavin hit a two-run homer and McCord an RBI single in the fifth, while Troy Brown singled in one run and forced a throwing error to allow another to score and Zac Fowler drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to score another.

The Saints who finished at 25-8 overall.
