SPANISH FORT, Ala. – The Spanish Fort men’s basketball team held off the Bayside Academy Admirals Friday night for a 68-50 victory.
The Admirals stuck with the Toros through a quarter and a half, and Spanish Fort held an 18-15 lead before they broke away on a 23-8 run that lasted until the beginning of the second half.
Spanish Fort’s Ben Redman led all scorers with 19 points, and Jejhaun Billingslea chipped in with 13 while Reagan Eubanks added 12.
“We’ve got to play more consistent ball,” Toros coach Earnest Hill said. “We’ve got to continue to rebound and play better defense. We also need to shoot better from the free throw line. We need to become more of a team.”
The Admirals fought hard, and after trailing 56-31 entering the fourth quarter, they rallied to cut the deficit to only 12 with around four minutes remaining, but Redman made his trips to the free throw line count and put away the Admirals late in the fourth quarter. Redman finished 11-for-12 from the charity stripe.
Geoffrey Steinbaugh led the Admirals scoring with 14 points, while Jordan Matthews chipped in with 12 points and Camp Campbell added nine points.
There was no scoring for the first few minutes with both teams struggling to find their shot, but the Toros raced out to grab a 15-8 lead after the first quarter.
Holding only a three-point lead, Spanish Fort’s Redman, Eubanks and Dalton Owens started finding their three-point touch to create a double-digit advantage heading into halftime.
