Toros beat Dolphins in penalty kicks

SPANISH FORT, Alabama — It wasn’t easy for the hosting Spanish Fort Toro’s on Friday night. In the end their were able to defeat the visiting and rival Gulf Shores Dolphins in Penalty Kicks after both teams were held scoreless after 90 minutes of play.

“I am glad we won. You hate to see a game come down to that, both teams played their hearts out,” Toros head coach Mitch Warfield said. “We will move on from this, it was a big game we were looking forward to. We expected this situation and it was a big win for us.”

The story of the game Friday night for the both the Toros and the Dolphins was the play of two of the starting goal keepers.

Both goal keepers, Jeffrey Chambliss of the Dolphins and Spanish Fort’s Kyle Ramirez were not pressured too much but each of them put up double digit saves over the 90 minutes of regulation and extra time to give the Toros a big home victory.

“It says a lot about my seniors. There are the leaders of our team and they have put our team on their backs. They don’t let each other get down,” Warfield said. “I am proud of them for doing that because it makes my job easier.”

With the game going up and down the field things started to slowly tilt in the direction of the Dolphin goal.

Luis Rangel-Medina seemed to have the ball the majority of the second half and he had a few chances to bury the ball in the back of the Dolphin net.

With less than a minute to play in the first half of extra time the Dolphins committed a foul inside their own goal box prompting the Toros to receive a penalty kick as time expired.

George Clarke had the opportunity to end the game giving the Toros the win but took the shot low and the left of Chambliss, who dove on the ground smothering the ball before it crossed the line.

After another scoreless second half of extra time the contest moved to penalty kicks.

Clarke had a second opportunity to score on a penalty kick he missed however as both teams’ first shots never hit the back of the net.

The Dolphins second kick found pay dirt as Zach Wilkinson kicked the ball passed Ramirez to give the Dolphins the lead in the PK’s.

The goal was their last as Ramirez stopped their next three shots while his teammates scored on their next two. Rangel-Medina and Thomas Wachter both made their kicks giving the Toro’s the win.

With the win the Toros improve their record to 7-4-3. They will be in action again on March 22 when they travel to take on the Admirals of Bayside.

The Dolphins will be in action on March 16 when they host Northridge.

They also play on March 22 when they travel to play the Vikings of Mary G. Montgomery.
