SPANISH FORT – The Spanish Fort Toros (5-1) beat the Faith Academy Rams (1-5) 38-13 Friday behind three rushing TD’s from senior running back Elijah Peters.
After a 10-yard Toros’ holding penalty, senior quarterback Patrick McGavin connected on 16-yard pass on first and 22 to junior wideout Luke Crittenton at the 5:37 mark in the first.
Senior kicker Derrick Horsch kicked a 40-yard field goal with three minutes left, capping a scoring drive that exhausted more than half the quarter.
The Toros held an early 3-0 lead after one.
Spanish Fort’s three-headed rushing attack of Peters, McGavin and senior running back Cullen Miner led another long Toro scoring drive, highlighted by a seven-yard TD run by Peters with 8:40 to go in the second.
Junior linebacker Blake Dees stripped the Rams’ ball carrier with 6:45 left and ran it back 65 yards to put the Toros ahead by two TD’s.
Horsch missed on a 41-yard field goal attempt with 25.8 seconds left in the half.
The first half ended with Spanish Fort enjoying a 17-0 lead.
McGavin connected with junior wide receiver Adam Adcock on an 84-yard TD pass with 9:26 to go in the third to put Spanish Fort up 24-0 after a successful Horsch PAT.
With 5:35 left in the third, the Rams finally got on the board with a 56-yard TD run to cut the Toro lead to 24-7.
At the 3:17 mark, Peters scored his second rushing TD with a seven-yard run to put the Toros comfortably ahead 31-7.
Horsch intercepted a Faith pass attempt with 1:24 left to give the ball back to Spanish Fort.
Peters scored his third rushing TD of the game with a five-yard blast with 5:48 left in the fourth to put the Toros ahead 38-7.
Faith Academy would tack on 6 more points before the final whistle blew.
