Toros charge to county track and field sweep

GULF SHORES, Ala.— Spanish Fort swept the boys and girls team titles at Baldwin County Public Schools 2016 Track and Field Championships in Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium at Gulf Shores Sportsplex Monday.

The Toros’ boys and girls were led by several point earners who either won or placed high in multiple events.

“I’m just really proud of these kids,” said Spanish Fort coach Byron Flanigan. “The girls competed and finished strong for us today. We got some clutch efforts that helped put us over the top. Like, Hannah Frain pushing to take second in the two-mile (3200 meters) and Anna Claire Whaley finishing strong in her throws. And also winning the four-by-800 (relay), that was big for us.”

Whaley had two second-place finishes in the discus and shot as well as a third in the javelin.

“For the boys part, very pleased with what we did today,” he added. “We've been working hard and we accomplished something special. We had some powerhouses come through. Stephan Holcombe, Javon Brown, Trey Barry, Cedric Dees all had wins and big top-two or three finishes. But it took everybody’s best to get the win. It was a team effort for sure.”

In the boys competition Spanish Fort’s Stephan Holcombe won three sprint events: The 100-meters in 10.85 seconds, the 200- meters (22.35) and the 400-meters (50.82). He also finished second in the long jump behind teammate Brown.

Brown ran the anchor leg of the 4X100 relay for a Toros win and swept three jumping events: the triple jump (48 feet, 6 inches), long jump (23 feet, 3 inches) and winning the high jump at 6 feet, 2 inches edging out teammate Barry. Barry won the javelin (180 feet, 4 inches) and the shot put (44.5 feet) events.

Dees also won two events, the 110 and 300 meter hurdles, winning in 15.55 and 41.13 seconds. Justin Thomas won the discus for SFHS with a throw of 137 feet, 9 inches. Seth Broussard won the pole vault for SFHS with a best of 6 feet, 6 inches.

Other individual winners were Tristan Wilson of Daphne with a 2:04.30 finish in the 800-meters. Anthony Barbosa of Foley won the 1600 in 4:44.84. Saxon Kilpatrick of Fairhope claimed the 3200 in 10:32.28.

On the girls side, The Toros were led by first-place finishes in the 4X100 and 4X800 relays as well as individual wins including Victoria Morris’ high-jump of 4 feet, 8 inches and Savanah Lee winning the triple jump with 36-09 mark.

Brooke Battiste led the runner-up Daphne team with wins in the 100-meters in 12.52 seconds and also claimed 200-meter dash in 25.84 seconds. Sydney Omtevdt led Daphne to a win in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.11. Megan Edwards won the 300-meter hurdles for Daphne in 51.15.

Gulf Shores’ Kelsey Canan won the javelin with a throw of 107-10. Amber Mason won the long jump for GSHS (15-04)

Lexie Williams of Fairhope won two events, the 800 meters (1:03.54) and 1,600 (2.35.47) meter runs. Sydney Coleman won the 400 meters in 1:03.54 for the Pirates. The Pirates’ Audrey Clark ran away with the 3200-meter crown in 12:57.73 and Annie Lineberger won the pole vault for Fairhope with a clearance of 8 feet, 3 inches.

Quazelia Woodyard won the shot put for Foley with a throw of 36 feet, 9 inches.

Jayda Cox of Baldwin County High won the discus with a mark of 87 feet, 6 inches.
