SPANISH FORT – The Spanish Fort Toros improved to 3-1 on the season with a convincing 45-6 victory over the Escambia County Blue Devils Friday at Toro Stadium.

The Devils fall to 1-2 with the loss.

Southpaw senior Toro QB Patrick McGavin had four touchdowns, two passing and two rushing, and senior running back Elijah Peters added three TD’s in the Toro win.

At 9:55 in the first, McGavin connected with Peters on a 51-yard bomb to give the Toros an early lead.

The Blue Devils were called for three successive penalties to start their first drive.

A personal foul moved them back to their own seven. A false start on second down moved the ball half the distance to the goal. Finally, a delay of game pushed the Devils back to their own two-yard-line.

On second and 14, Spanish Fort recovered a fumble at Escambia’s five-yard line.

With 7:50 left in the first, McGavin ran a QB-sneak from two yards out for his first rushing TD to put the Toros ahead 14-0.

Spanish Fort’s defense was impressive early as Escambia could not move the ball past their own 28-yard line the entire first quarter.

At 1:40, Peters ran for an 18-yard pickup, blasting through the Devils’ defensive line, breaking three tackles in the secondary.

The Toros maintained an early 14-0 lead as the first quarter ended.

At 11:07 in the second, Toros’ senior kicker Derrick Hosch split the uprights from 32 yards out to give Spanish Fort a 17-0 lead.

With 9:32 to go, Toro junior Blake Dees intercepted a Blue Devil pass and ran it back to the Escambia 19.

On the next play, McGavin tossed a 19-yard TD pass to junior Billy Harris to put the Toros ahead 24-0 after a successful Horsch PAT.

Facing fourth and 12 on the Toros’ 40, with 6:30 to go in the half, the Devils decided to go for it but their pass attempt came up incomplete. After the turnover on downs and a lengthy drive, McGavin scored his second rushing TD from 13 yards out with 2:52 to go in the half and the Toros enjoying a 31-0 lead.

Spanish Fort recovered an Escambia fumble on the second half opening kickoff after the Devils lost the ball on their own 17.

At 11:04, Peters rushed for his third TD on the night. At 9:10, the Toros’ Otis Smith ran it in from the 10 yards out.

The Devils managed to finally put points on the board by hanging 6 in the fourth quarter.
