The Spanish Fort Toros take a break from the 5A Region 1 race to host 6A Mary G. Montgomery tonight.
Spanish Fort (2-1, 1-1) suffered their first loss to region rival St. Paul's last week while MGM comes to the Hill at 1-2 overall and 0-2 in region play after nearly upsetting Murphy in week two. But last week No.2 Davidson shutdown the Vikings 45-7.
Spanish Fort head coach Bryant Vincent said the hot-and-cold Vikings' unpredictable play can be dangerous because, at the core, they are fundamentally sound.
"MGM is a very solid football team. They are very physical and tough.
“They have several play-makers on offense and swarm the football on defense."
In their first region game, the Vikes were leading 16-6 over Murphy with the ball on the Murphy two yard line before a fumble was returned 98 yards for a Panther score. Murphy went on to win that 6A Region 1 showdown.
Daphne takes on Williamson at Ladd Peebles Stadium
Daphne travels to Ladd-Peebles to take on newly added region foe Williamson.
The Trojans remained undefeated last week to go 3-0 overall and 2-0 in 6A Region 2 with a tough 17-13 win over Foley. The WHS Lions are 1-2, 1-1.
The last time DHS played Williamson at Ladd, a strong wind came up and blew a Trojan extra point back into the field. "I will never forget that," Daphne coach Glenn Vickery said. "It blew back in our face after it cleared the cross bar. Luckily, it did not cost us the game."
Now as a region opponent, the stakes are higher.
"Our kids need to understand Williamson is now a region opponent," he said. "That makes it an extremely important game for both of us. Williamson is one of the fastest teams we will play. We must match their speed which is very difficult to do. We need to control the tempo of the game."
Vickery said the Trojans still need to reduce their turnovers and penalties.
"We're still a work in progress, against Foley we had too many penalties and turnovers, but we are growing up and improving."
He also said the kicking game will also be important as it was against Foley. "Brandon Roberts, our kicker had a solid night punting, place kicking and kick offs. We are pleased with our efforts but like all teams we have to continue to improve to be a good team."
Vickery added that WHS likes to spread the ball and QB Marcus Riley does a good job of getting it to their quick back Darion Sneed and to receivers like Derrick White.
Defensively, the Lions base starts out with a four-man front. "They have not blitzed a lot so far in their first three games. They are not real big but play big," he said. "Linebacker Morris Turner makes plays all over the field."
Pirates host BCHS in region game
The Fairhope Pirates welcome Baldwin County to Majors Field for a 6A region 2 contest.
The Pirates are 2-0 in region play while the Tigers are 0-2. So far, over the first three games, Fairhope has scored 65 points while BCHS has produced just 10. The Tigers have been outscored 113-10 in the first three games this season.
In a rivalry that has spanned 73 seasons, BCHS leads the series 37-36.
No. 8 Admirals host Clarke County
Bayside Academy (3-0, 2-0) is looking to remain undefeated as they take on 3A region opponent Clarke County (1-2, 1-1) in Daphne tonight.
The Admirals made school history last week by going 3-0 with a 50-0 shutout over the Eagles at Montgomery Academy. It was the second-straight region victory for the Admirals.
Lions host Jackets for homecoming
The Foley Lions (2-1, 1-1) host the McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets in a 6A Region 2 showdown tonight at Ivan Jones Stadium.
Foley lost to Daphne last week, while McGill-Toolen (2-1, 1-1) defeated Baldwin County.
Dolphins hope to bounce back against Vigor
Gulf Shores (0-3, 0-2) is looking for a win after struggling to start the 2010 season. Vigor (2-1, 1-0), ranked No. 9 in 5A, defeated Citronelle 40-19 last week, while Gulf Shores fell to LeFlore 39-16.
Bears seek second region win
After picking up its first region win under head coach Scott Phelps last week against Williamson, the Robertsdale Golden Bears seek another on the road at Satsuma tonight.
The Bears (2-1, 1-1) defeated Williamson 17-13 last week, while Satsuma (1-2, 0-2) lost to Fairhope 35-13 in 6A Region 2.
