GULF SHORES – Class 5A’s defending champ Spanish Fort will have to share its second-straight track and field title this year.
The Toros tied with St. Paul’s for first place in 5A in this weekend’s AHSAA Track and Field championship at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. The Toros and Saints finished with 77.5 points each. Valley finished third in 5A with 48 points.
Brett Hanke won the boys 1600 meter run, while Ethan Rich won the boys javelin for Spanish Fort.
The Toro 4x800 relay team of Hanke, Trevor Stevens, Ben Redman and Nick Davidson placed first in the event.
Rich finished second in the boys discus throw, while Redman finished second in the boys 800 meter run. Redman and Hanke finished fourth and fifth in the 3200 meter run, and Redman fifth in the 1600.
Keller Davis tied for fourth in the high jump, and teammate Davares Ambrose took the seventh spot in the event.
Lady Dolphins finish
seventh in 5A
The Gulf Shores Lady Dolphins placed seventh in 5A.
Gulf Shores took three of the top four spots in the girls discus throw. Emily Brett won the event, while sister Erin Brett placed second and Allison Taylor finished fourth.
Emily Brett also finished fourth in the girls javelin throw.
Other area athletes place in 4A-6A
Chris Tilley placed second in the 5A 300 meter hurdles for Gulf Shores.
Pydrae Carroll finished in third place in the 6A boys triple jump for Fairhope.
Bayside boys, girls compete in 3A
BIRMINGHAM – The Bayside Academy boys and girls competed in the AHSAA 3A Track and Field state championship on Saturday at Birmingham-Southern College.
Bayside’s girls finished second while the boys finished third.
Shelby Builta set a state meet record in the javelin with a throw of 127-1 and won the shot put and the discus for the Lady Admirals. Alona Melendez won the high jump, the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles.
For the Bayside boys, Stewart Shoemaker won the 800 meter run and the 1600 meter run. He also finished second in the 400 meter run.
Bayside’s 4x100 relay team of Joby Allen, Scooter Blake, Shoemaker and Camp Campbell won the event with a state-record 3:26:05.
