SPANISH FORT, Ala.— No. 1-ranked Spanish Fort scored on six of seven possessions in the first half, on one defensive fumble recovery in the Williamson endzone and on the first drive of the third quarter to max out at 49 points 37 seconds into the second half.

Junior varsity players finished the game for a 49-6 Class 5A Region 1, homecoming-night  win over the WHS Lions on The Hill at SFHS. The win completed the first-ever undefeated (7-0) region sweep in Spanish Fort High football history. The Toros are also unbeaten overall at 9-0 while the Lions dropped to 0-9.

“These kids have been through a lot of firsts and this one was a big one for them to be a part of,” said Spanish Fort coach Mark Freeman. “So far, so good this year. Every week we break a new record and every Friday night is special.

“They worked hard all week and then got the job done tonight. They didn’t take Williamson for granted. All our players had a chance to play. I'm proud of the players for coming out and playing with the intensity that they did at such a high level."

Trey Shabel scored from the 3-yard line on the seventh play of the Toro’s 64-yard opening drive and Alexander Theodore kicked the first of his seven extra points to start the rout.

LaDarrell Pettway ran for an 18-yard touchdown to cap a four-play 51-yard drive,  quarterback Tyler Johnston tossed a 10-yard TD pass to Kevin Marion, then found Hunter Wood for a 14-yard scoring pass all before the first quarter ended with SF leading 28-0.

John Wesley Williamson recovered two WHS fumbles for SF, the second good for the fifth   touchdown about four minutes later. Shable scored again on a seven-yard run before the half.

Mike Howard’s 35-yard touchdown with 11:23 capped the shortest SF drive of the night, two plays to make it 49-0. Tre Threat also recovered a fumble for SF.

With 1:28 left in the game, Lion quarterback Geremy Hickinbottom heaved a long throw to Trevonn Bingham for an 88-yard TD pass. The try for two points failed and Spanish Fort ran out the clock.

"The defense had a real good night for us," Freeman said. "They played real aggressive and created opportunites for us. They gave our offense a chance to work on some things, get our execution better. All or our players had a chance to play. "

Avery Werther was named 2013 Toros Homecoming Queen at halftime.

SFHS will host Mobile Christian School on Halloween Thursday. WHS will trick or treat at Blount Thursday to close out the regular season.

The Toros will then host the first round of the 5A state playoffs Nov. 8.
