MOBILE, Alabama — It was a sweet sweep for the Toros cross-country teams at the 5A Section 1, Site A championships at Langan Park Thursday. The top three teams advance to the state meet as do some unattached individuals with qualifying times.
Spanish Fort’s Girls won for the first time in school history at the sectional level and did it over long-time repeat champion St. Paul’s by a convincing margin of 22-40. The Lady Dolphins of Gulf Shores then took third with a solid differential of 80-95 over perennial contender Faith Academy, said SF head coach Michael Rauch.
Lady Toros Carissa Jones, Hannah Frain, Olivia Smith, Caroline Vegas and Sophie Bengel all made the Top 10.
St. Paul’s senior Anna Braswell was the fastest girl of the day with a winning time of 19:48.58, but Toro middle school runner Carissa Jones’ second-place time for Spanish Fort of 20:57.23 would also have taken second in the Class 6A girls race behind Baker’s Carsandra Pickens’ 20:40.16.
The Spanish Fort Boys then won the 5A Sectional Meet over St. Paul’s by a margin of three hard-fought points 33-36. Satsuma finished third to make state with an 89-99 score over Faith’s Rams.
“These two teams have been going back and forth as the best boys team in the area, all divisions,” Rauch said. “This is the first time our boys have won since 2009.”
Cooper Sewell, Will Kent, Jack Morgan and Kevin Jones turned in Top 10 times to help the Toros charge by the Saints for the overall win.
