SPANISH FORT, Alabama—Reagan Eubanks had a grand time Friday night reaching the 1,000-point plateau in the final quarter of his final regular-season home game on senior night.
The three-year starter capped the evening with the game-high of 27 points as his Spanish Fort Toros went on to an 84-59 win over visiting Foley.
The Toros senior shooting guard finished the third period with 999 points and reached the “Special K” mark on the front end of a free throw about two minutes into the the last frame.
“It’s exciting to really do it, especially here at home on senior night with my family and friends all here,” he said. “I knew I was getting close but didn’t know exactly until last night when coach (Dru Powell) told me about what I needed (27). So, he told me to go for it and not get into foul trouble, but I ended up in it anyway. Still I was able to get open and then I got some great picks and passes from my teammates and was able to make it. But they were looking out for me and they really made it happen for me.”
Powell said Eubanks was a team-first player who could have scored even more by now, but was always looking for an open teammate who had a better—higher-percentage—shot.
“He’s not just a good basketball player, but a great young man who cares about other people and is a very good student also,” he said. “We’re proud of him, but not surprised he reached it in just three years, because he works so hard to be a good all-around player for the team. And when you do that, hustle every minute, scoring chances come your way. Of course he always had a good spot-up set shot, but he has really gotten better and better at being a cutting, slashing type scorer inside and that really opened up his scoring opportunities even more. But he’s always been unselfish and is always up there on things like assists for us, too, and rebounds. He’s fearless and goes all out for the team. Has great character and integrity and is a fine example to the younger guys coming up and the community, too.”
Toro junior Quinn Atkinson added 14 points and Austin Depperschmidt 12 points as all 14 players got at least two points. The Lions were led by Wayne Fralick who scored 13 points and Velle Adams and Malik Johnson who added seven each.
The Toros (23-5) will travel to B.C. Rain Friday for the first round of the 5A Area 2 Boys tournament where they will take on Williamson at 7:30 p.m. Gulf Shores will play Rain earlier that night at 6 p.m.
The Lions will play Fairhope Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Baldwin County High for the chance to advance and play Baldwin County’s Tigers in the 6A Area 3 tournament at BCHS Friday at 7:30 p.m. Daphne and Robertsdale will play Friday at 6 p.m.
