Toros visit McAdory in 5A semifinals

MCCALLA, Ala. – The Spanish Fort Toros will be playing for the chance to advance to the 5A state championship tonight when they play McAdory High School in McCalla at 7 p.m.

Spanish Fort head coach Bryant Vincent made it clear last week after his team blanked Hueytown 28-0 that his team is not satisfied with just making it to the semifinals, they plan to win it.

But getting it done will not be easy. Both teams are 11-2.

"We are going to have to play solid in all three phases and not give up the big play in the kicking game or on defense," he said. "They have been and are traditionally a very good football team."

The teams have never met, but after watching game film from this season, Vincent is concerned with their offensive speed and their combination of size and speed on the defensive side.

"They run the double wing and are the fastest football team that I have seen on film in a long time. Their team speed is incredible. I have thought on several occasions that I had hit the fast-forward button while watching film of them, but I hadn't, it was just them blazing down the field. Their QB, No. 7 (Brandon Bender) and No. 3 (Emmett Terry) are two of the most explosive skill guys that I have seen in awhile," he said.

"Defensively, they run a 3-4 with multiple looks in the secondary. They are anchored by three giants on the (defensive) front. Their nose is 6-foot, 305-lbs, and their two defensive ends are 6-2, 270 and 6-3, 260. They are not only big, but very agile too. Their (linebacker) and (secondary) are all extremely fast and fly to the football."

Vincent said the excitement and intensity has grown each week of the season, especially since the playoffs began three weeks ago.

"As you advance each week, the atmosphere and electricity grows. How could it not, you got two good football teams playing for the south championship, with the winner advancing to Auburn. I think the key to the game is to limit big plays on defense, be solid in the kicking game, and not turn the ball over on offense. We have to make our possessions count."

Vincent added that his offensive line and the whole defensive unit contributed to the quarterfinal win over Hueytown and their continued good play will be essential if the Toros are to win again tonight.

"Our offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage the entire night, they are the young men that are making it happen right now, they deserve a lot of credit. Our entire defense is playing every snap as if it is their last, I am very proud of those men. We are playing for the south championship, our players, coaches are motivated, our community is motivated."
