Toros' Weems signs with Meridian CC

SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Toros senior center midfielder Gavin Weems signed Wednesday to play soccer at Meridian Community College (Meridian, Miss.) in the fall.

Weems is a four-year letterman and a longtime assists leader for the Toros and head coach Mitch Warfield.

“I have always wanted to get a scholarship and play soccer in college,” Weems said. “This is a dream come true. I’m excited.”

Warfield said Weems has been a solid mainstay player since taking over the Toros program three seasons ago.

“Gavin lives soccer. Great touch on the ball. Great work ethic. He’s been playing varsity for us for four years. I took over from coach (Joe) German when Gavin was a sophomore and he was already so knowledgeable about the game even then.

“He’s also just a real team player who always supports his teammates. Always works hard and plays hard every game. Really a guy who deserves the accolades here. It validates all the hard work he has put in. Very proud of him and I know he’ll represent Spanish Fort High School and the community well.”

Weems expects to play the mid-center spot for the MCC Eagles. “Left center mid is where I have played most and mid-field is pretty much my area of expertise, but I can play pretty much anywhere if they need me to. I really like the coach up there (Alex George). He’s a good coach, knows the game and he’s a real family man and that’s important to me. I also like the small-school environment there.”

The son of Christina and Tim Weems, Gavin is considering a major in Graphic Design, but also a future that may involve coaching after his playing days.

“I definitely want to play as long as I can and want to hopefully stay around the game. Maybe as a high school or college coach.”

He added that there were people to thank. “I want to thank my parents most of all for all their support throughout all my adventures and ordeals. Also all my coaches I had since I was a kid and coach Warfield. And my uncles who played in college and pushed me to get better and to play in college, too.”

The MCC Men's Soccer Eagles open the 2014 season at home hosting in-state rival Holmes Community College in an exhibition match Aug. 19.
