Spanish Fort topped all teams with a 204 point total as the Baldwin County Tigers took second with 124 points. Daphne was third with 108 while Fairhope, Foley, Gulf Shores and Robertsdale followed.
“Our guys came through in a big way,” said SF coach Mike Rauch. “We knew we were strong in the sprints and we won multiple events, but the best event of the day for us was the mile. Conner Irion just ran the race of his life, ran his heart out for us. His second (place finish) and with two of our other boys who came in at 5:02 and 5:03 with PRs—well that really put us way up there. We just attacked all the right events with the right people at the right time. The distance kids did their thing, the sprinters did theirs. And then we just piled on points, did well in the throws and hung in there in the relays for some more.”
He added that with the best 5A high jumper in the state this year in the Toros’ own Grant Schumacher, the event was one he was confident his Toros would win even though Schumacher was nursing a sore back. “Of course high jump was kind of a gimme with Grant, but we took first and second and no one else scored anything. So that was like 18 points extra we got for free.”
Rauch said his athletes and parents were proud to host the county championship for the first time, but it was a true team effort to get the facility ready.
“It was a great day and I really want to thank all our parents for helping. They sold Tee-shirts and kept things on track. And also all the other volunteer coaches from all the schools and the officials for all their help. We really wanted to put this track and equipment to good use and it worked out well. We had some weather issues yesterday, but I think it worked out okay. Really proud of the boys and the girls for all their hard work and preparation. We have a couple of kids out today with injuries, but we hope we’ll have everybody able to go by sectionals.”
Sectionals are set for April 26-27 at McGill-Toolen Catholic.
Some of the top performances included the Toros’ Stephan Holcombe who won the Boys 100 Meter Dash clocking an 11.27 second mark and won the 400 with a 51.32. Javian Davis of Foley ran a 22.57 to win the Boys 200 Meter Dash for the Lions.
The Boys 800 was won by Thomas Grace of Fairhope in 2 minutes, 5.89 seconds with Toros Anthony Luna and Irion close behind collecting second and third-place points.
Cody Parker of Baldwin County High won both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. The Tiger senior ran the metric mile (1600) in 4:44.43 with Irion near at 4:58.93 and Caleb Casolaro third for Fairhope. Parker then claimed the 3200 crown in 10:29.75 with Grace second (10:48.18) and Daphne’s John Alan Walker across at 10:59.57.
In the Boys 110 Hurdles, Mason Hileman of Daphne won in 16.63, Luna was second and Bradley McMinn of Gulf Shores third. Hileman also claimed the 300 Hurdles in 44.69.
Anton Winkey of BCHS was second and Luna third.
Foley’s Lions roared to victory in the 4x100 Meter Relay in 44.46. BT Sanders, Davis, Willie Dennis and anchor Tashuan Thompson traded the stick for the Foley win.
Gulf Shores took home the gold in the 4x400 Relay as the team of Jaxson Cales, Nate Harris, Braxton Hart and Connor Martin posted a 3:44.29.
Daphne was the 4x800 Relay winner in 9:21.19 with Jake Cady, Walker, Zach Murphy and Alex Guillory on each two-lap leg.
The High Jump was swept by the Toros as Schumacher cleared 5-feet, 8-inches to win. Schumacher’s best statewide jump this year to lead Alabama 5A boys is 6-05. Quinn Atkinson of SF jumped 5-04.
Defending county Pole Vault champion Spencer Woerner jumped 11-06 to win the 2013 title. TQ Adams of BCHS won the Long Jump with a 20-02.50 and the Triple Jump with a 40-04.00.
The best Shot Put throw was 43-00 by Gulf Shores’ Lee Michael McVay, the best Discus toss was 124-03 by Emmanuel Fennell of Robertsdale and the best Javelin distance was a 156-05 recorded by the home team’s Marcus Walton for the Toros.
